Newsletter 132 - 14nd February 2014

Changes to Newsletter Distribution:
Welcome to the first newsletter for 2014. This will be the last printed newsletter which we will send home. All future newsletters will be distributed electronically via email. There is a specific notice about it in this newsletter, as we need to ensure that we have your current email address to assist in improving communication. Newsletters are usually distributed fortnightly and are available on the Liston College website. There will be some printed copies available from the school office for those parents or caregivers who do not have access to email. As we become more familiar with this system we will identify other areas where we can replace paper with a digital copy. I look forward to your feedback

Staff Retreat:
Each year the entire staff – teaching and support- gather at the start of the year to focus on the year ahead and remember our purpose as a Catholic school. This year we gathered at the Columba Centre in Ponsonby and were fortunate to have Fr. Richard Leonard SJ to lead us. He is a world-renowned presenter who willingly made himself available for our retreat. He certainly stimulated and challenged us – making for a most valuable day.

NCEA Results:
I have included a table which shows the results for Liston College compared to National figures. They are outstanding results which continue the success which the College has shown for some considerable time. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the staff who have worked tirelessly to help the students achieve success. I also wish to acknowledge your support in this success. My staff appreciate your commitment to improving teaching and learning at the College.

We also had success in the Scholarship exams. Dylan Woods achieved success in Physics, Calculus and Statistics – a superb achievement. Johnson Cheuk was successful in Physics, Jayden Crooks in Painting, and Conor O’Hanlon in Music. Anthony Yelavich achieved an Outstanding Scholarship in Biology. Well done!

Senior Students Attending Classes at St Dominic’s:
This year a number of senior students from both schools will be taught in the other school. This is restricted to two subjects for each student at the other school. The reason for the co-operation between both schools is to give all senior students greater opportunity to have their choice of subjects. More efficient use of our combined teaching resources has enabled more students to avoid subject clashes in the timetable. The Year 13 Deans at both schools have been working with the students to ensure a smooth transition.

Year 8 Camp:
The Year 8 students attended the annual camp at Finley Park Camp at Karapiro. The lovely summer weather helped to make the week a successful one - for staff and students alike! I wish to thank Mr Lord and his team for the thorough organisation and supervision. I also wish to acknowledge the parents who gave up their time to assist with the camp. Thanks very much.

This year Liston College will compete in the ASB Polyfest. We have entered in the Tongan competition. Mr Fotu who has recently joined the Mathematics Department and Geoff Thomas – an Old Boy – will be ensuring that the cultural group is well prepared to represent the College.

Mr Swann organised the Powhiri for new students and staff. It was great to see so many parents were able to attend this important event. This year Ryan O’Hanlon – an Old Boy who has joined the teaching staff this year, spoke on behalf of the Manuhiri. Ryan is one of 7 Old Boys who are on the teaching staff.

PTFA – and New Parents’ BBQ:
Each year the PTFA organise a BBQ for parents new to the school, or parents whose son is new to the school. This will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18th February. I look forward to meeting you then.

Gala: HELP!
The PTFA is busy organising the annual Gala. This year it will be held on Saturday 15th March. If you are able to assist the PTFA with the planning and organisation of this event it would be most appreciated. Please contact the school office and your details will be passed to Yvonne Wood the PTFA Chairperson.

Athletics Days:
Mr Borich is currently organising the annual Athletics Days which will be held on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st February. This event is one of the highlights of the year and is very important in helping to build school spirit – and Inter-House competition!

This is a reminder to ensure that your son has protection from the sun. All students are given full instructions on the requirement for the two days to ensure they are sun-smart. You are most welcome to come and join us.

Welcome Back:
We welcome back Mr Worth who has been absent from school since the beginning of November. He is now fully recovered from his surgery - and definitely more mobile!

I look forward to being able to communicate more frequently using email.

May God bless you and your family
